Update – 16 February 2023

February 16, 2023

It’s been a few months since my last update, and I have a good reason for that.

For the longest time I have been waffling on whether I wanted to proceed with remodeling this house. My issues with getting tradesmen to even come to the house much less give me a quote, plus the fact I live 5 hours away, made this project seem simply impossible to complete.

I was seriously considering just ignoring the house, letting the county take it for taxes, and writing off the expense. Yes, it was a lot of money, but  some times you have to cut your losses.

But about two weeks ago I changed my mind.

The thing is, I like to go to SF conventions, and a couple weeks ago I got the news that 2 SF conventions I wanted to attend had dropped their mask mandates. I doubt they will be the last SF cons to do so, and since I don’t think it’s safe to large public events if they don’t require masks, I suddenly have more free time.

I’m now going to take the time I would have spent at cons and use it to work on the house.

The first thing I had to do was to figure out how to fit in my work day. I can’t commute to Clendenin (it’s a five hour drive) and taking several days off did not seem practical, so instead I am going to try to work remote from The Clendenin House.

This means that I’ll need a bed to sleep in, food and water bowels for the dogs, and a fridge, microwave, and the usual housewares. I’ll also need to set up a work station.

The bed will be an inflatable one, the appliances will arrive next weekend, and the dog stuff will go at the same time as the dogs, but the work station took a little more thought.

I work as a web designer, so all I really need is a desk with a large monitor, and good internet connection. The desk and table I already had, so all I needed was the internet connection. I got a 5G hotspot from Cricket, and I am hoping it will do the job.

In fact, I was out at The Clendenin House today, dropping off the table and stuff. I have commitments this weekend, so I won’t be able to actually get out there until next Friday.

My plan once I do get out there will be to alternate between spending a couple hours working on the house, and then a couple hours working on websites, etc. I am hoping to get the trash cleaned up that first weekend (and maybe some painting), but we’ll have to see how that works out.

This blog was launched in order to share one newbie home buyer’s experience in buying and remodeling a wreck of a house.

Like the house itself, this blog is a work in progress.
